The Environmental Impact Of Agriculture Essay - 1253 Words

The Environmental Impact of Agriculture Facing challenges of exploding population growth throughout the world, and with that more mouths to feed, the pressure on the business of agriculture to create food security remains enormous and growing. â€Å"Malnourishment effects 1 in every 3 people on earth, and about 18 million people, mostly children, die each year from starvation. Thirty-seven countries are expected to have food emergencies, with Africa standing out as the continent with the most serious food shortages,† (Moore, 2007, p. 117). Adding salt to the wound, the earth’s resources are geographically inequitable and scarce forcing agriculture to rethink how it does business. Simultaneously, whole societies are increasing in affluence and thus raising expectations and consumption habits. However, what does the impact of antibiotics, pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and mass water consumption mean for our environment and our health? Exploring these topics through the kaleidoscope le ns of Mother Nature, this paper explores how present agriculture norms, while wholly necessary, are inflicting long term damage to many of our most precious supplies, damaging our health, and casting a dark shadow for future generations. Power And Bullying Samples for Students †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Power And Bullying In Organisations. Answer: Introduction The theme of this paper aims to focus on bullying in the workplace regarding the extent of power by organizational leadership and the causation of it. Power is regarded as a crucial aspect of bullying. Bullying in the organization is referred to as the behavior of hostility in communication to a person at the workplace that is done by a group of individuals or the manager. This action involves the unfair treatment of employees verbally or through acts where an employee may feel defenseless, offended and intimated. Bullying in organizations is termed unlawful as indicated in the Equality Act 2010 (Butler 2016). A lot of research has been done on the causes of bullying in previous years. It has come out clear in those studies that environmental factors and the working conditions in the organization. The role of leadership in bullying falls under the environmental factors. The main factors associated with bullying in the workplace include the change in the organizational management, workload, conflicts in work roles, less satisfaction with the workplace leadership, and poor work environment (Thomas Reuters (Professional) Australia Limited 2010). Bullying sufferers have described their working environment as unethical and hostile, having autocratic leaders. Power has the authority to control others thus; a leader in the organization can coerce an employee to do something that is against the employee integrity due to the authority held by the leader. For instance, Microsoft Corporation has had a history of bullying one of its employees, Michael Mercieca, where he was falsely accused of sexual harassment, supervisors undermined his work and denied promotions in the sales department. This happening began after he broke up with a female colleague who later was promoted to be his boss. Bullying also takes places through discrimination from having a disability. For instance, an employee in one of King Soopers supermarket stores in Lakewood was bullied because of his learning disability by other workers in the warehouse. Discrimination through power in organizations is very rampant. Some employees are discriminated on the grounds of races. For instance, DHLGlobal Forwarding group has had bullying history, where some employees were bullied beca use of their nationality. For instance, those from Hispania were subjected to names such as stupid Mexican and wetback. This led to employees feeling demeaned due to the disrespectful insults are thrown to them. In the workplace, there are five sources of power: referent, reward, coercive, expert and legitimate (Nahavandi et al. 2014). In these five sources of authority, bullying may be exercised. For instance, in coercive power, employees may be bullied through regular evaluation and critics of their work. For example in Palo Alto Company, that deals with tech; an employee was bullied by the supervisor who was younger by embarrassing her in front of colleagues for mistakes she did not commit and involving her in delicate tasks with limited resources. Under referent power, bullying situations occur where the violator, spreads rumors about you in the organization. In legitimate power, bullying is also exercised in situations such as the imposition of heavy work; unrealistic deadlines set tasks and frequent monitoring of work being done. Under the reward power, bullying mainly occurs in situations where a victims ideas are ignored and is denied promotions over petty reasons. Finally, under exp ertise power, harassment is likely to occur, where the violator withhold valuable knowledge on how to perform some work in the organization, negatively affecting output (Australian Psychological Society 2014). From the above analysis, it is clear that power exercised in the organization could be used negatively for bullying purposes. The examination looks into the victims' situation of obeying the instructions in order not to go against the leaders. This power limits the employee ability to overcome bullying. It is quite clear that the primary cause of bullying is mainly associated with power. Employee dilemma arises in the case of his needs on resources that violators have power on and overcoming the action. Victims are dependent on the perpetrators. This topic was quite informative, especially in distinguishing the examples of bullying acts under each source of power. The topic was well understood during the learning process, and I have encountered fewer difficulties in handling the task. From the information gathered in my research on the topic, this is an area that every organization should consider, especially the human resources department to protect the employees. Bullying has negative impacts on both the victim and to the organization. Its repercussions may include absenteeism, reduced work morale, and turnover that simultaneously leads to reduced productivity in the organization. These consequences may result in the organization not achieving its goals in the end. I would recommend organizations to adopt occupational and health legislation laws that apply to their organization to curb bullying. Old Hamlet and Claudius Essay Example

Old Hamlet and Claudius Paper Claudius, Old Hamlet and Polonius are all fathers and the way in which each is presented by Shakespeare is quite different. On the surface, the play is a revenge tragedy in which a grieving son seeks to avenge the death of his murdered father. However I think it has been very cleverly crafted by Shakespeare around a bleak theme of appearance versus reality that explores the corrupt, sinister region of the human nature that is present beneath the surface of us all. Shakespeares portrayal of many of the characters in the play and in particular of fathers is as both malevolent and egotistical. Claudius hypocrisy masquerades as fatherly love and concern; Polonius obsequiousness and search for position masquerades as service to the King, using his daughter as a pawn in the process; Old Hamlets torment and manipulation of Hamlets emotions is passed off as regaining his honour. On the surface fathers are presented by Shakespeare as having to be loved, honoured and obeyed almost without question. However the effect this has on their children is quite catastrophic leading to resentment, repression, bitterness, madness and eventually death. I will examine the way each of these characters is presented with close reference to Act 1 Scene II (Claudius), Act 1 Scene V (Old Hamlet) and Act 1 Sc. III (Polonius). Claudius, the newly crowned King of Denmark and uncle to Hamlet, assumes the role of Hamlets stepfather after marrying Gertrude following the death of old Hamlet. He takes on this role very early on in the play when he publicly announces his love for Hamlet in Act 1 Sc. II: And with no less nobility of love Than that which dearest father bears his son do I impart toward you. This use of play on words in Hamlets first line of the play reveals his bitter frame of mind. Claudius is no longer a mere relative but his father and Hamlet is not kindly disposed toward him. Claudius on the other hand, seems more than willing to adopt the role as his new father. On the surface, he is presented as a loving father but hints of duplicity become apparent in later scenes. He is aware of Hamlets popularity and is perhaps trying to exert some control over him as well as win the favour of his people and wife. In the Lawrence Olivier filmed interpretation of the play it is only after Gertrude expresses concern for Hamlets well-being that a change in his attitude becomes apparent. At this stage of the play, the audience is unaware of Claudius devious and self-centred nature and so it is difficult to establish if he is sincere in his affection toward Hamlet. He is aware of Hamlets power to form a faction against the King because of his popularity and throughout the speech in which he talks to him, he must choose his words carefully so as not to provoke him further. He is also rather forceful in this speech and tries to persuade Hamlet not to leave for Germany, away from his prying eyes: And we beseech you, bend you to remain Here, in the cheer and comfort of our eye, Our chiefest courtier, cousin, and our son. (I. ii. 15-17) This is intended by Claudius to comfort Hamlet, encourage him to stay, and emphasise the point that he will be held with the greatest respect as a noble, cherished as a kinsman and loved as a son. However it could also be taken to have a very different, more sinister connotation; he would be able to constantly watch Hamlet for any treacherous behaviour. Shakespeares use of language in Claudius speech makes his words seem persuasive and cajoling, trying to make Hamlet come out of his mourning and turn to support his new father. He speaks smoothly using assonant sounds, Survivor bound in filial obligation and Throw to earth this unprevailing woe. Shakespeare uses imagery of thunder and a cannon, however, to reflect Claudius joy at Hamlets affirmative answer; these are not particularly joyous sounds of revelry which denotes he has some ulterior motive. Imagery of disease and decay used in Hamlets speech, An unweeded garden that goes to seed, helps to suggest he may have a sense of his step-fathers hypocrisy. Old Hamlet appears to Hamlet several times throughout the play, in spirit form. The audience do not actually see him in life and it is therefore difficult to judge what sort of a character he is as there is no real evidence he is not from hell The spirit I have seen may be the devil. Shakespeare presents Old Hamlet and Claudius differently and Hamlets actual father is portrayed in a much better light than his hypocritical step-father drawing a distinction between fathers and step-fathers. Hamlet draws several comparisons between Claudius and Old Hamlet. His first soliloquy is studded with imagery So excellent a King, that was, to this, Hyperion to a satyr. This is an interesting contrast; he sees Claudius as a satyr, a Greek mythological beast that loved to indulge in all kinds of sensual pleasures in comparison to his father who he describes as the Titan Hyperion, father of the sun, the moon and the dawn. He is as far from his brother as Hamlet is from Hercules My fathers brother, but no more like my father than I to Hercules ! Clearly Old Hamlet is presented in a far better light by Shakespeare and the audience feels more sympathetic towards him. It is easier to understand why Hamlet reacts to him as he does.

Oral History essays

Oral History essays At its most basic definition, oral history is an account of the past conveyed through word of mouth. Oral history tells of cultures and individuals by presenting oral commentary of events, situations and feelings of individuals. Oral history has made important contributions to the ways in which historians and the general public understands and interprets the past. (Stursberg 1997) The beginning of the modern form of oral history is said have originated with Allan Nevins of Columbia University. According to Peter Stursberg, in his Canadian Encyclopedia article on oral history, the modern oral-history movement began in 1948 when Nevin interviewed subjects accompanied by a graduate student who took long hand notes. Nevin evoked a sort of stream of consciousness, or as Stursberg calls it, "stream of reminiscences" from his subjects. Oral histories provide an effective tool that allows historians and anthropologists a chance to preserve oral traditions, skills and crafts. (Vansina 129) In her book, "Oral Tradition as History," Jan Vansina writes that, "The full cultural or individual significance of quilting or the making of a musical instrument can only be obtained through the nuance and subtlety of oral language. Thus we can learn much from a personal history that we could never obtain from a textbook." The practice and method of oral history has had a tradition probably as long as history itself. Herodotus used the method of interviewing survivors' experiences about the past for his account of the Persian wars in the 5th century BC for example. (Stursberg) Ancient cultures would pass down the history of their tribes using the oral tradition. Chosen tribal "historians" would memorize long tracks, usually in the forms of poems or ballads, of tribal history and be charged with maintaining the facts in memory and passing it down to following generations. (Vansina, ...

How to Use Reddit to Unlock Awesome Blog Post Ideas Blog Do you ever feel like you’re on the edge of breaking through with your content marketing? That you know how to create amazing content for your blog and promote it, but the traffic just isnt quite there. In my experience, the problem typically doesnt lie in your writing skills or knowledge. Instead, its in the ideas that you choose to write about. The best post in the world won’t get any attention if it’s on a topic that your audience doesn’t care about. Look at what Neil Patel, Brian Dean, and other successful content marketers publish.   The content itself is very good, but nothing you couldnt create in most cases. The difference lies in their ability to generate loads of content ideas that their readers love. How to Use Reddit to Unlock Awesome Blog Post Ideas Download Your Free Blog Post Ideas Bundle Start your creative process with awesome ideas from Reddit. Then, turn those ideas into real, high-performing blog posts with these free resources: A Content Marketing Ideas worksheet to help you build a â€Å"swipe file.† A Keyword Research List Template to store your keyword ideas. A Blog Ideas Guide with 150 bonus ideas. A free Content Calendar Spreadsheet template to plan out when you’ll create each idea. A Blog Post Outline Template to easily turn your ideas into awesome blog posts. Chances are that you’ve come up with some great ideas in the past. But there’s one problem that most of us run into ... It’s hard to come up with great ideas on a regular basis. Instead, you probably decide to go with some â€Å"just okay†Ã‚  ideas out of necessity- after all, you want to publish something. The solution to this problem is to find ways to come up with more great ideas on a regular basis; that much is obvious. There are different methods to do that, and I’d like to show you the best one I know of in this post. I’m going to show you exactly how to generate as many blog topic ideas as you need, that your audience will love. Generate as many blog topic ideas as you need, that your audience will loveThe 2 Places That Great Blog Topic Ideas Come From Contrary to popular belief, most great ideas don’t come about from just thinking hard. Instead, they come from observing and interacting with the people you actually write for (or want to write for). I’ll mention it time and time again: your audience is the key to great content ideas. Broadly speaking, we can classify great content into 2 categories. 1. Solutions to Problems that Your Audience Knows Will Help You wouldn’t be reading this post if you didn’t have some trouble coming up with great content ideas. The more trouble someone has with this problem, the more motivated they’re going to be to read this post. That goes for anything. If a piece of content can solve a problem that you know you’re struggling with, you’re going to give a chance. Recommended Reading:  How to Easily Find Awesome Content Marketing Ideas 2. Solutions to Problems that Your Audience Doesn’t Know Will Help It’s a small, but important distinction. If you’re really ingrained into an audience, you’ll be able see some solutions for their problems that they can’t see themselves. This is where real innovation takes place. For example, when travel took too long, people wanted faster horses. Henry Ford came up with the car, which was a way better solution no one had thought of before. Ideas that fall into this category are typically innovative. They bring some new value to your audience, which is great. The downside, however, is that these ideas are much harder to come by (and to execute). Additionally, it’s harder to promote them at first because audiences look for obvious solutions (type #1). They aren’t as motivated (possibly scared) to give something that seems different a try. Key Takeaway: Most content ideas that we’re going to come up with will come from the first category. These ideas are abundant, and easier to execute well. The methods we’re using later on will naturally produce these ideas. Introducing Reddit: The Best Idea Source That Few Marketers Use It’s not a secret place by any stretch- it’s Reddit. Reddit is a solution for many content marketing problems that marketers don’t even consider (yes, that would by category #2 from above). It can be a scary site if you’ve never used it. But once you dig in and learn how it can be useful for content marketing, it will blow your mind. Reddit is the 26th top site in the world as of this moment- it’s huge. It consists of niche-specific communities for about every topic imaginable. Just pure, focused data from actual audiences. It should be a marketer’s dream. The catch? It takes hard work. Be honest with me. How often have you just plugged in a keyword into Google’s Keyword Planner  to get content ideas? It’s quick. It’s easy. Almost every marketer has done it at some point. But you get the exact same ideas that everyone else gets. It’s a lazy solution, and you get the results that you’d expect. Instead, you can invest some time and effort into researching Reddit to get unique ideas. There are 3 ways that you can approach content idea generation on Reddit. I’ll walk you through them all. Recommended Reading: This is the Best 30-Minute Content Marketing Brainstorming Process Approach #1: Find the Right Questions to Ask I’m going to assume that you understand what a subreddit is, and how to find a relevant subreddit  to your niche. If not, this video will get you up to speed: This is a simple approach, but it takes a lot of manual work. You don’t need to do any sorting. Just go to your subreddit and start looking at thread titles for questions (because questions indicate problems).. For example, here’s what r/Entrepreneur  looks like as I write this: Right away, you can see 4 questions: What should I give my founder? (talking about shares of a business) How should you sell a (lifestyle) business that’s generating significant revenue How do you get sponsors for an event? How do you generate passive income? Tip: You only want to pay attention to questions if the thread has a decent score (the number on the left). A higher score indicates that many people in the subreddit have a similar question and are interested in a solution. Now we can generate content ideas based on these questions: The Definitive Guide to Dividing a Business Among Cofounders A Step-By-Step Guide to Selling Your Lifestyle Business A Simple Process to Get Sponsors for Your Next Event (with examples) X Ways Your Can Generate Passive Income: The Complete List If those posts were well written and posted in that same subreddit, they’d get hundreds of views. Skip any problem if you can’t come up with a â€Å"solution† to create. However, remember that solving the toughest problems usually bring the greatest rewards. At this point, just add every question you see to a list (simple text file, spreadsheet, etc.). Additionally, look in the comments of each thread for followup questions. The top level comments will usually be answers to the original question. But the ones that reply to those comments are often questions. For example, from the above thread about passive income: There’s 4 more questions right there: How do you get physical products manufactured? How do you go from prototype to finished product? Should you build your own homepage or hire a developer? (to extend that - how do you hire a developer for business?) What are the most important skills to have in starting a new business When you reach the bottom of the subreddit page, go to the next one...then the next one...and so on until you have a list of hundreds of questions. This might take an hour or two, but batching it all upfront will be most efficient. Next, come up with different solutions (topic ideas) for each problem. If you can come up with a few different angles, that’s great. If you feel that some solutions are too basic or not worth creating content about, just skip them. After all, you should have hundreds more. Approach #2: Find the Keywords (If You Know Your Audience Well) This is an approach that works well if you’re also trying to drive search traffic. With the first approach, you may or may not have a good keyword to target in your content, but here you will for sure. There are 3 main steps to do this. Go Through Threads and Write Down Potential Keywords Start by heading back to your relevant subreddit(s). While you can leave the threads in the default order, I recommend sorting by â€Å"top†, and then â€Å"of all time†: Now, go through each thread and write down phrases that could be good keywords to target. This includes both the title and comments in each thread. Don’t worry if the keyword might not be great, we’ll filter out the bad ones later. Here’s an example of the current top post on r/Entrepreneur of all time: There 3 obvious long tail phrases in the opening post that might be worth targeting: â€Å"SEO tutorial for beginners† â€Å"Making money from an affiliate site† â€Å"How to get authority sites ranking† Don’t expect to find hundreds per thread, but you can usually find 5-10 (sometimes some duplicates). From one of the comments, I quickly found another one that appears promising: Again, you want to build up a massive pile of these keywords in a text list or spreadsheet before moving on. If you need a target number, look to get at least 200 or so to start. Recommended Reading: How to Improve Your Keyword Research With Latent Semantic Indexing Run Your Keyword Ideas Through a Keyword Tool A lot of those keywords that we just found will have very little, or no actual search volume. Now that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t target them. You could still rank for similar variations that do in fact have some search volume. However, we want to be sure so that you don’t waste your time. This step involves running those keywords through a keyword tool. You can use any tool you’d like. For the examples below, I’ve used Term Explorer. You can do 1 of 2 things: See if the exact phrase match for each keyword has a search volume Get related keyword suggestions based on each keyword (recommended) The second option ensures you'll find any close variants that have actual search volumes. I ran those 4 quick keywords that I found, and it turns out that only one of those has any exact search volume in the U.S.: You’ll find that happens a lot, which is why I recommend starting with a big list. However, most keyword tools will also produce close variants that do actually have search volumes. For example, Term Explorer also found: search engine optimization tutorial - 500 searches per month seo for beginners - 500 searches per month how to make money with affiliate marketing - 500 searches per month hire seo expert - 500 searches per month Keep in mind the relatively recent Google Keyword Planner update  that doesn’t give exact volumes (i.e. 100-1000). It looks like Term Explorer is just taking an average value. These aren’t amazing keywords, but they’re not bad. If you have a large starting of keywords, you will find at least a few excellent keywords to target directly. Keep in mind that all this is different than just plugging in a few broad niche keywords into a keyword tool. You won’t stumble upon most of these keywords using that lazy method. This lets you avoid a lot of the competition who all go after the same, easy-to-find keywords. Base Content Off of Those Keywords Eventually you’ve found keywords mentioned on Reddit and search engines. These keywords allow you to naturally get traffic through multiple channels. Keywords are even easier to turn into content ideas that having to think of a solution to a problem. From above, you might think of: A Step-by-Step Search Engine Optimization Tutorial SEO Simplified: SEO for Beginners That Produces Quick Results The Comprehensive Guide on How to Make Money With Affiliate Marketing Want to Hire an SEO Expert?  Here’s How to Not Get Burned For the most part, keywords lend themselves to straightforward titles. Here's how to turn keywords from Reddit into awesome content ideas:Optional:  Automate This Process Using the Reddit Keyword Research Tool As a developer, I had a huge problem with this approach. I liked the results, but it took several hours (not exaggerating) per month to just research the keywords. So eventually, I built an automated solution that you can also use if you’d like. The tool scrapes threads and comments in a subreddit, pulls out keywords, and checks search volume. All you need to do is find your subreddit, and then plug it into Keyworddit: I ran it with the default settings, except setting â€Å"relevance† to â€Å"high†. It produced a list of 155 keywords scraped from the subreddit that actually have search volume. Automate keyword research with this free #reddit keyword tool built by @DaleCudmore:Out of these, there are still some junk keywords. But, there are also several that I wouldn't have found before. Then, just create content ideas like we did above. I’d encourage you to plug in the best of these keywords into another keyword tool to get even more ideas. This will be brief, however, because it’s nothing new. Essentially, it’s the Skyscraper Technique  approach. The basic idea is to: Find popular content Make similar content, but make it way better Step 1: Find popular content. Step 2: Make similar content, but make it way better. It definitely works. If an audience liked the original content, of course they will like a much improved version. To do this, again sort your subreddit by â€Å"top†. You can choose between â€Å"All time† and â€Å"Past year† depending on how fast your niche changes over time. You won’t be able to improve every thread. Sometimes you don’t have the knowledge or experience to do so. From above, I’ve identified 2 opportunities for improvement. Original: 37 Tactics I used to grow my company to $50k/month in sales without spending a penny on marketing. Original: How startups such as Dropbox, Airbnb, Groupon and others acquired their first users. Improvement: I studied how Dropbox, Airbnb, and 50 Other Top Startups Got Their First Users: Here Is How They Did It. You have some flexibility in how you improve upon it: Make it longer (more in-depth) Make it â€Å"better† (better writing, graphics, maybe offer video/images) As long as you’ve maintained the core idea, it’s going to do well. Whenever I’ve done this, it’s always surpassed the score of the original thread. Editor's Tip: Store Your Ideas in Once you've generated some awesome blog ideas using Reddit, you'll need somewhere to keep track of them. There are two easy ways to do this in :1. Drop your ideas directly onto your content calendar: 2. Use the Unscheduled Drafts folder to save them for later: Start Generating Better Blog Ideas With Reddit Reddit isn’t the only place to get content ideas, but it’s a great  one to have in your repertoire. There’s a never-ending supply of content ideas for almost every niche. I encourage you to use all 3 approaches so that you can have a huge number of blog topic ideas to work with. One last thing to keep in mind is that not all ideas you get from these approaches will be great. It’s up to you to have high standards of what you actually move forward with and produce.

Analysis paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Analysis paper - Essay Example that is taken care of or is valued even if taking care of it costs the caretaker important things in his/her life; in this case, the relationship between the American and the girl. This is evident from the confession of the American to the girl he has made in this sentence, â€Å"That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy† (Hemingway). It is apparent from the dialogue between the two that while the American is not directly telling the girl to undergo abortion, he is indirectly pushing her into this act by constantly suggesting that a lot of people go through the operation and it does not cause any harm. On the other hand, the girl seems to be reluctant to contemplate the operation. This is suggestive of a liking for the unborn baby by the girl and a dislike by the American. Similarly, while the girl can see the mountains as white elephants and appreciate their beauty, the American does not seem to relate to the white mountains in any way as he says, â€Å"I’ve never seen one† (Hemingway). The girl says to the American, â€Å"No, you wouldn’t have† (Hemingway). This attitude is typical of girls. When a man does not seem to understand or approve of something that is of huge significance to women, women say that the men cannot understand because only a woman can understand the importance of that thing. For example, it takes becoming a mother to understand the warmth and passion with which a mother loves her child; a man can never understand this love because he can never become a mother. In response to this, the American says, â€Å"I might have†¦Just because you say I wouldn’t have doesn’t prove anything† (Hemingway). Now this is an attitude typical of men. They are too egoistic to give up even if they actually don’t know about something. The girl has a number of reasons to want the baby just like the American has them to not want the baby. The American does not want the child probably because it takes a lot of

ASCE INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT CARD Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

ASCE INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT CARD - Essay Example All through the 20th Century, the nation’s leaders imagined large scale infrastructure plans that stirred the public and added to unprecedented financial growth. Much of that infrastructure is approaching the ending of its design life, and there are increasing problems with worsening across all public infrastructures. In order to build an infrastructure to serve the desires of the new century, there must be bold leadership and a convincing vision. We have to be certain to maintain and preserve the foundations that previous generations have set up for us. A new overarching advance is desired. The approval of the State’s surface transportation is an outstanding place to begin. From the above assertions, I believe that the consent is supposed to spotlight on four goals for the surface transportation: Sustainability, resiliency, and ongoing upholding must be an essential part of improving the state’s face transportation system. Since infrastructure is built or transformed, life-cycle cost analysis is supposed be performed to account for early construction, running, preservation, environmental, safety, as well as other costs sensibly expected during the life of the project, like as recovery before disruption by or manmade hazards or

A Smart Shopper has Nothing to Fear :: Essays Papers

A Smart Shopper has Nothing to Fear In William Creek life is easy. Of the five residents two are named John. The town consists of nothing more than a bar/convenience store. The outsiders seen are only the truckers who pass though. Once a week, one of the Johns drives 100 km to a more established town to pick up provisions and mail. As he sifts through his mail he finds a couple packages. Inside is the new shirt he ordered from J Crew and the French perfume his wife wanted. In another package is the hot Cajun sauce for jambalaya. He asked the local grocer to carry it for years, but they didn’t see a need. John is experiencing the luxuries of technology, even in his rural area he is able to connect to the Internet. John like millions of others has access to almost any product he cares to buy. Meanwhile in Chicago, Mindy is renting movies online for a romantic weekend. The web site brings up an ad to shop at one of its sister sites. She orders some lingerie and continues to compulsively buy items. Now h er email box is full of spam, or as companies have one believe â€Å"special offers.† Two days later the movies arrive, but one of the DVDs is scratched and unplayable. The nighty turns out to be a bit over the top and Mindy wouldn’t be caught dead in it. Luckily Mindy had been convinced to buy three other outfits. Frantically, Mindy races to the video store to get what she really wants. The previous two cases, like so many others, capture some the main issues facing businesses on the Internet. The idea of having a global market, while still capturing the safety of home, presented a unique opportunity for the business world. Many people believed that the dot-com collapse indicated the direction of the Internet, but they were far from correct. Customers still have an affinity to use traditional means of shopping, but this too is changing. Businesses have the opportunity to serve a large market, and customers have access to more merchants than ever before. While security issues and criminal behavior is on both the merchant and the consumers mind they are willing to take the risks to evolve to the new business model.

The Technology’s Influence in Todays World

Every single day a new type of technology is being introduced to the world. Technology has improved a lot over years, and it is a great thing these days, because it can be very helpful, especially for people with disabilities. However people are taking advantage of it. I think life is impossible without cell phones and laptops! This phrase sounds shocking but reality is reality. Some people can’t live without modern technology like cell phones. Everybody knows what modern technology is. Modern technology is a technology created or invented to help us do works and make our life easier. i think we should perfectly understand that modern technology can make our life more convenient and safes a great deal of our time. We become lazy because of modern technologies like cell phones, washing machine, televisions, and others. People used to wash their dirty clothes using hands, but now they just have to put their dirty clothes into the washing machine and press some buttons. as we know. Modern technologies create financial problems, too. Because most of the modern technologies are too expensive to buy. People need to be active in order to be healthy. Walking to the store, riding a bike instead of a car, visiting a post office instead of sending an e-mail, all these things may or may not be more convenient, but they are a better alternative because it involves doing things physically. Being active means just a little more then the click of the mouse. Everyone loves the Internet. Suddenly everything just becomes so fast and easy. But easy does not necessarily mean better. Although being active enough is a major concern when it comes to modern technology, there are more things to worry about. Today’s technology can be as simple as the push of a button. Because everything is so easy, human’s brain is functioning as much as it should, and that is not a good thing. People need to develop their brain by reading, thinking in order to be smart, however its nearly impossible with the kind of technology we have these days.

Engineering Hours Accounting System Essay

Introduction Avitronics is a medium sized engineering company that produces components for the aerospace industry. Employees keep track of the hours they work on different projects and at the end of the week turn in a timecard with this information on it. The company can take up to roughly 12 contracts a year; each of these contracts is assigned a ‘Job-Code’. The Current System At present each employee keeps track of their hours using their own system. This could be as informal as a rough tally on a scrap of paper. At the end of the week, the employees fill their hours into a formal timecard, which is handed in and tallied by a clerk. Objectives of The New System Mr. Salomon (the chief accountant) would like a system with data entry forms so that each employee can input their own hours into the system at the end of each week. He would like to have pull-down menus for the job-codes, so that clumsy engineers entering complicated codes do not make mistakes. Hours should be rounded to the nearest quarter-hour. Data entry should be quick and simple. Each individual employee should not be able to see the hours worked by everyone else. The information should be sent to a database from Mr. Salomon can produce reports. He wants to be able to get a report that shows how many hours each employee works each week (these should be sorted by employee number). Mr. Salomon would also like to have a graphical report, which shows the total number of hours worked each week against each contract. He would like to start a fresh new system at the start of each year. Mr. Salomon would also like an easy to understand user guide, which should include complete instructions for a novice, using no jargon. Performance Indicators My solution will have to: * Prevent all employees seeing other employees’ hours. * Be simple to use, and not waste employees’ time. * Prevent errors wherever possible by using validation and combo-boxes. * Allow Mr. Salomon to create reports (with graphs) from entered data. * Include a template for Mr. Salomon to reset the system at the start of the year. * Provide Mr. Salomon with a User Guide designed to assist novice users when they are using the solution. * Accurately calculate the total hours for each employee per week, accurate to each quarter hour. Accurately calculate the number of hours worked on each contract per week, accurate to each quarter-hour. If all of these criteria are met then my solution will be successful. Design Choice of Software A Spreadsheet is the best solution to the problem because I can use the software well already and I know how to solve the problem using this software. I have chosen to use Microsoft Excel because it is the most common piece of spreadsheet software in general use. I could use an equivalent spreadsheet package from a different company, but this may not be compatible with Mr. Salomon’s computer. Features of Excel that make it ideal for solving the problem: * Ability to create a blank template * Pivot tables to create sophisticated reports with graphs * Formatting to help make it clear to the user where to enter data * Macros to automate various functions * Macros which will execute automatically on opening and closing workbooks * Validation and Protection of cells to prevent tampering and errors Systems Overview My system will be based on one workbook, with three sheets (excluding reports). The Hours Entry sheet will be the main input form, where employees will enter the hours they have worked, on what days and on which contract. The Admin Options Sheet is where the Administrator changes Contract numbers and groups, he/she also sets the week beginning date. The database sheet is where reports and charts will be produced form. Detailed Design Follows on the next 6 pages†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Workbook and Sheet Discussion Hours Entry Sheet – This sheet is designed to let the employees enter their hours in a quick and simple way. It is important to keep it simple so that employees do not become disgruntled and frustrated with the system. This sheet has a simple colour scheme that distinguishes input cells from cells where input is not required. Combo boxes are used to keep certain aspects simple and to prevent mistakes. Buttons are used to execute macros that clear the sheet and transfer relevant data to the spreadsheet. As hours have to be recorded by the closest quarter-of-an-hour, I have used a ‘ceiling’ formula in the total cells to prevent mistakes being made when data is transferred to the database. Admin Options Sheet – This sheet contains any options the administrator may need to set concerning the system He/She can add/remove contracts and add/remove groups of workers. At the start of each working week He/She has to set the ‘Week Beginning date’ that is needed throughout the system, it is essential they enter this date correctly. The colour scheme for this sheet is simple, every cell is white, input cells have borders to distinguish them form non-input cells. This sheet contains two buttons that execute macros: – Protect Workbook – This macro opens up the protect workbook dialog, where the administrator can protect the whole workbook, with the exception with cells that are not ‘Locked’ (input cells). – Start New Year – This macro erases all the data in the workbook, and prepares the system for a new year. A warning box automatically pops up when this button is clicked to warn the user that they will be deleting all entered data from the previous year. This is to prevent all the data being removed accidentally. Database Sheet – This sheet contains all the data that has been transferred from the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’. It contains – Employee #, Hours Worked for each employee. – Job Code, Hours Worked for each contract. From this data, an employee report can be created, this is a report listing all the employees, and the number they have worked in a given week. From this data, a contract report can be created; this is a report listing all the contracts and the number of hours worked on them for a given week. From this data a contract graph can be created, this is a graph showing the number of hours worked for a given contract over the past month (4 weeks). These outputs will need to look professional and be suitable for their purpose. Data entry and Validation These are the fields in which data will be entered into my system: Last Name – The employee will type this in. I chose this method, as there is no reasonable alternative. Employee # – This will be typed in by the employee. I chose this method because there is no reasonable alternative. Employee number is a four-digit number. This cell will be validated so that numbers bigger than 9999 are not accepted; also text is prevented from being entered. I use this validation so that problems do not occur further on the process, when reports sorted by employee number are being produced. Group – The user will select this via a combo box this ensures no typographical errors are made when typing it in. I am choosing to use a drop down box as there are few options for the employee to choose from. Job-Code – This will be selected from a drop down box to prevent typographical errors being made. If it were a plain cell, with no validation or input aids, if an error was made it could cause unwanted consequences throughout the system. Monday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Tuesday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Wednesday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Thursday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Friday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Saturday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. Sunday – Employees enter their hours by typing the number in the correct cell. Any number they enter will later be rounded up to the nearest quarter hour, by the use of a ceiling formula. The validation on this cell will be that it has to be a number between 0 and 20. User Aids to Operation User Aids to Operation that I have used are combo boxes, and buttons that execute useful macros. Combo boxes assist the user with entering data when there are only a few options to choose from. They also help prevent mistakes from being made when typing out something complicated. For example in my system, the user uses a combo-box to select a job code, if they had to type every job code in it is more than likely that every week several mistakes would be made. By using combo-boxes I have eliminated the probability of this occurring. By using buttons that execute macros I have enabled the employees to enter their hours in a simple entry form. If I did not use macros then each individual would have to type hours into the database, this could cause a huge number of problems for the company. Protection Sheet 1, Hours Entry Sheet The following cells on this sheet will NOT be protected: C6, Last Name C5, Employee # C10:C16, Monday’s Hour Entry Cells D10:D16, Tuesday’s Hour Entry Cells E10:E16, Wednesday’s Hour Entry Cells F10:F16, Thursday’s Hour Entry Cells G10:G16, Friday’s Hour Entry Cells H10:H16, Saturday’s Hour Entry Cells I10:I16, Sunday’s Hour Entry Cells These cells will not be protected because when I protect the sheet, I want them to be ‘editable’. Eg the employees need to enter data into them. Macros Transfer_Macro – This macro will be executed from a button on the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’. The macro transfers required data from this sheet into the database. After it has transferred the data it will return the user to the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’, where they can exit the spreadsheet when they are ready. If the transfer is completed successfully then a message box will popup saying ‘Transfer Successful’. Create_Employees_Report – This macro will create a report on the employees. It will copy selected data from the database, paste it into a new sheet and format it appropriately. The report will show the employee number, last name, hours worked for each week for each employee stored in the database. Create_Contracts_Graph – This macro will use selected data from the database to create a graph showing how many hours are spent on each job code over a period of weeks. The graph will show all of the job-codes and all of the data about each job code that is stored in the database. Auto_Open – This will execute automatically when the spreadsheet is opened, it shows the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’ and clear all of the white input cells. It will select the ‘Employee #’ input box ready for the user to begin. Clear – This macro clears all of the white input cells in the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’. If the employee enters a few mistakes or realises he has entered totally wrong data, instead of having to delete every piece of data separately he/she can simply click the button that executes this macro. Protect_Workbook – This macro will be executed via a button on the ‘Admin Options’ page, this will hide all menus and the taskbar and take the user to the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’. It will also run the ‘Clear’ macro so that the ‘Hours Entry Sheet’ is always blank when it shows up. Start_New_Year – This macro erases all data from the database ready for the system to begin a new year. The employees and job codes will stay on the admin options page as it would be unreasonable to assume that all the jobs were finished at the end of the last year. Data Flow Diagram Testing Test Strategy This is what my solution is required to do, as outlined in the Performance Indicators section of the Analysis: * Prevent all employees seeing other employees’ hours. Here is an outline of the tests I will have to carry out on my spreadsheet: * Does my system open correctly? * Ensure that the Database and Admin sections are hidden from the employees. * Ease of Use, as little complications as possible. * Tests of Validation (effects of incorrect/extreme data entry) * Tests of Protection * Accurate calculation of hours * Does my spreadsheet cause problems after closing? Test Plan The following tests will be performed: Basic Function Tests: 1. Open my spreadsheet. 2. Add data as outlined in test data set 1. 3. Test the ‘Submit Hours’ button. 4. Add data as outlined in test data set 2. 5. Test the ‘Clear Form’ Button. 6. Add data as outlined in test data set 3. 7. Test the ‘Submit Hours’ button. 8. Test the ‘Exit System’ button. 9. Reopen the spreadsheet. 10. Try entering data from test data set 4. 11. Try entering data in a locked cell (eg. The cell containing the word ‘Group’ and the cell containing the word ‘Totals’). Admin Function Tests: 12. Open my spreadsheet. 13. Test ‘Admin Options’ button, enter password from test data set 5. 14. Test ‘Admin Options’ button, enter password from test data set 6. 15. Test the ‘Enter New Employee’ button. Enter the data as outlined in test data set 7. 16. Select cell ‘F19’, Test the ‘Delete Job Code’ button. 17. Select cell ‘B11’, click the ‘Delete Job Code’ button. 18. Test the ‘Enter New Job-Code’ button, enter the data as outlined in test data set 8. 19. Test the ‘Enter New Job-Code’ button. 20. Test the ‘Create Contract-Chart’ button. 21. Test the ‘Employee Report’ button. 22. Test the ‘Change System Password’ button. Enter the password as outlined in test data set 9. 23. Test the ‘Protect System’ button. 24. Test the ‘Admin Options’ button. Enter the password as outlined in test data set 6. Error massage should appear. 25. Test the ‘Admin Options’ button. Enter the password as outlined in test data set 9. 26. Test the ‘Change System Password’ button; enter the original password again as outlined in test data set 6. 27. Test the ‘Start New Year’ button. 28. Click ‘File’ then ‘Exit’ please do not save any changes to the spreadsheet. Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera)

Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera) The honey bee, Apis mellifera, is one of the several species of bees that produce honey. Honey bees live in colonies, or hives, of 50,000 bees on average. A honey bee colony consists of a queen, drones, and workers. All play roles in the survival of the community. Description As many as 29 subspecies of Apis mellifera exist. The Italian honey bee, Apis mellifera ligustica, is most often kept by beekeepers in the western hemisphere. Italian honey bees are described as light or golden in color. Their abdomens are striped yellow and brown. Hairy heads make their large compound eyes appear ringed with hair. Classification Kingdom: AnimalPhylum: ArthropodaClass: InsectaOrder: HymenopteraFamily: ApidaeGenus: ApisSpecies: mellifera Diet Honey bees feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. Worker bees feed the larvae royal jelly first, and later offer them pollen. Life Cycle Honey bees undergo complete metamorphosis. Egg: The queen bee lays the eggs. She is the mother to all or nearly all members of the colony.Larva: The worker bees care for the larvae, feeding and cleaning them.Pupa: After molting several times, the larvae will cocoon inside the cells of the hive.Adult: Male adults are always drones; females may be workers or queens. For the first 3 to 10 days of their adult lives, all females are nurses that care for the young. Special Behaviors and Defenses Worker bees sting with a modified ovipositor on the end of the abdomen. The barbed stinger and attached venom sac pull free from the bee’s body when the bee stings a human or another target. The venom sac has muscles that continue to contract and deliver venom after it is detached from the bee. If the hive is threatened, the bees will swarm and attack to protect it. Male drones do not have a stinger. Honey bee workers forage for nectar and pollen to feed the colony. They collect pollen in special baskets on their hind legs, called corbicula. The hair on their bodies is charged with static electricity, which attracts pollen grains. The nectar is refined into honey, which is stored for times when nectar may be in short supply. Honey bees have a sophisticated method of communication. Pheromones signal when the hive is under attack, help the queen find mates and orient the foraging bees so they can return to their hive. The waggle dance, an elaborate series of movements by a worker bee, informs other bees where the best sources of food are located. Habitat Honey bees require an ample supply of flowers in their habitat since this is their food source. They also need suitable places to build hives. In cooler temperate climates, the hive site must be large enough for the bees and for storage of honey to feed on during the winter. Range Though native to Europe and Africa, Apis mellifea is now distributed worldwide, largely due to the practice of beekeeping. Other Common Names European honey bee, Western honey bee Sources Beekeeping Basics, published by Penn State College of Agricultural Services Cooperative ExtensionTexas AM University, Honey Bee Lab
